How long does it take to build a SCAMP Sailboat?.....
My detailed hourly daily log of the construction of my SCAMP Sailboat is below.
I completed my SCAMP Sailboat project in 319 hours. Note that this time includes customizing the trailer, making wooden oars, making wooden cleats, updating the MKI bulkhead to the MKII design, building a custom wooden boarding ladder, making the portlights, and painting a 6 color scheme. If one went for a one or two color paint scheme, and skipped all the other options, I think a decent first timer could have the SCAMP built in 270 hours. Time could be further reduced by buying the mast, boom, and yard, if so desired.
I began the construction of the SCAMP "ARGO" on December 31, 2015, and completed it on May 27, 2018. With kids, full time job, and winter down-time over the first winter (I installed a garage heater in over the 2nd winter of building SCAMP to avoid a 6-7 month down-time in the garage due to temperatures here in Wisconsin), I averaged about 11 hours a month working on this boat. Each row below represents a day that I worked on the SCAMP, but note that there were many days of no work, and there are no rows for days on which no work occurred. Keep in mind that I am building the SCAMP from the Small Craft Advisor kit, which saves time. My SCAMP build time is adversely affected by the time needed to clear out space in the active garage, and set up tools for work opportunities that are often an hour at a pop; I think longer work periods would shorten the build time. I am a decisive, quick worker, but setting-up shop each time I needed to work lost me minutes. At the end of the day, why rush!? The construction is half the fun. This has been a wonderful and fulfilling project to undertake.
