Applying the name was a very gratifying experience
I bought metallic and vinyl decals from www.islandboatlettering.com, and their decals came with a plastic squeegee, application fluid sprayer, instructions, and the decals. Not wanting to make a mistake and be left re-ordering decals and re finishing a spot on the boat, I was very careful with preparation, and I followed their instructions closely. The Argo's name will be displayed on the uppermost plank, on the starboard and port sides, towards the stern.
The decal comes sandwiched between two sheets. One sheet is the application-tape that they are stuck to, and the other is a cover sheet of wax paper.
Carefully peel off the wax paper cover sheet, exposing the sticky reverse side of your letters, and the tape. I did this in the garage, but if you were outside, be very careful not to let the sticky sides stick to each other.
Spray a generous coating of the application fluid over the whole surface of the sticky side of the tape and letters.
Then generously spray down the area on the boat where the decal will go. This fluid will allow you some time to move the decal around on the surface and locate it right where you want it.
Then carefully lay the decal into position on the boat. I measured to make sure it was in the right spot (measure to the letters, not the edge of the tape sheet...). Then squeegee out the water and air bubbles from the center towards the edges. When that all down the water and air is out, wait a minute, then re-wet it with the fluid and repeat the squeegeeing.
Wait 30 minutes and then carefully pull off the tape at a 45deg angle. I am pleased with the decal quality.
Et voila, decal is applied. I am pleased with the result.
